How to read between the lines of a job posting

How to read between the lines of a job posting

Job posts are marketing copy written by a company about itself. Read them like a critic.

Phrases that signal trouble

  • "Fast-paced environment" often means "understaffed".
  • "Wear many hats" means "no defined role".
  • "Rockstar" or "ninja" means "we have not thought about what we need".

Phrases that signal health

  • A specific salary range.
  • A named manager or team.
  • Concrete goals for the first 90 days.

Cross-check with the company

The posting is one data point. Look at how long similar roles have been open, and what current employees say. A job board listing is a snapshot, not a verdict.
